artist
I am Hannalie Wium and live in Ceres, South Africa.
Above all, I see myself as a colourist. Colour is my passion and most of my paintings are birthed from a colour-inspiration. I love to do abstract art as well as flower paintings and portraits.
For years I’ve been teaching art. I now have the time to practice my own art. There’s a saying: “If you teach, you learn twice…” I found my ‘artist voice’ by teaching.
Working through art genres, periods and tecniques to share with my students, I fell in love with the brushstrokes of the Impressionists, the intuïtive process of the Abstract Expressionists and the patterns in the paintings of Klimt, in the Art Nouveau period.
Combine the above with the patterns and richness of colour of Africa, where I live, the music I listen to while painting and my emotions at the time, result in the art I make.
In doing abstracts, I start off in a very intuitive manner, by putting paint randomly on the canvas - just enjoy playing with colour. I then look to see what patterns I can see in this combination of colours.
Next I switch to a more “left-brain” activity, where I draw some patterns. In that, make sure of art elements and design principles, like: a focus point, balance, tonal value, movement, texture, space etc.
After that, I switch back to intuitively painting in the patterns. I work layer upon layer, sometimes completely cover previous layers and start something else.
Every layer contributes to a richness in the painting and my wish for the viewer is that they see something new everytime they look at the painting.
I also wish for them to experience the joy and peace I experience while painting.
